James M. Dungan, from Kingsport, Tennessee, attended George Washington University, and received a B.S. in Botany, cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and received his law degree from Cornell Law School in 1981. During law school, he worked for the New York State Office of the Special Prosecutor for Onondaga County, helping with the prosecution of white collar crimes. Upon admission to the New York Bar in 1982, he worked as an appellate attorney for the Frank Hiscock Legal Aid Society in Syracuse, New York, and then as a law clerk to the Hon. Raymond T. Burth, Judge of the Onondaga County Family Court. In 1988, he was admitted to practice in Virginia and worked as a staff attorney for Peninsula Legal Aid on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In 1990, he became a trial attorney for the Office of the Public Defender in Staunton, Virginia. He went into private practice in 2005 and soon joined the firm of Poindexter, Schorsch, Jones & Hill as an associate counsel. His primary focus is on criminal defense, plaintiff personal injury, and general litigation. He is currently qualified by the Commonwealth of Virginia to try capital murder cases as well as all other felony cases.
